EK's internship program provides the opportunity for students and people looking for more experience, to be involved with the advocacy or scientific, cultural-natural resource management work that we do. 

Internships with Kimberley Nature Projects in environmental science are for undergraduate or postgraduate students in environmental sciences or community development or people with these experiences. Internship activities will depend on what is needed for our conservation projects at the time, but could involve biodiversity surveys (e.g. plant transects, fauna surveys), bush regeneration (e.g. seed collection and propagation, revegetation, weeding), research, data management, cross cultural community engagement and healthy County activity planning, and other tasks.

Key personal traits we are looking for include a willingness to learn, an ability to work both independently and as a team, a passion for conservation, an openness and interest in working with Aboriginal project partners, and a tolerance for working in the often hot, humid and remote Kimberley and desert regions. 

Internships in advocacy would suit passionate people from a variety of backgrounds. Internship activities may involve skills related to media, communications, research, events organising, fundraising, community engagement or administration. All these elements are essential to the successful running of Environs Kimberley advocacy work.

Internship opportunities with EK's Sustainable Communities Team to assist with the Wattleseed Collective will be available in September and October 2024.

A few things to consider:

• The application process - After reviewing your application, EK staff will assess the intersection between your interests, experience and availability, and our upcoming project and organisational goals. This review will happen periodically and may take a little while for us to find the right fit but please be patient and we will be in touch.
• Travel and accommodation - Environs Kimberley is a not-for-profit organisation operating in the remote Kimberley region and costs associated with travelling to, and staying in, Broome can be considerable. Generally, interns will need to be self-sufficient and make their own accommodation, transport and other arrangements outside of work requirements.
• When to come - Broome has a tropical climate, defined by a wet and a dry season. The wet season generally lasts from November until April, while the dry season runs from May until October. Most of our on-ground environmental science projects are undertaken in the dry season and this may be the best time to consider an internship with Environs Kimberley.
• Duration of the internship - Internships can occur during semester breaks or during term. Ideally interns commit at least 4 days a week for a month, or on a regular day/s on a weekly basis for three months. If you have a shorter amount of time we have various volunteer opportunities for you to get involved in.
